River Park North Walkies!

Greenville is a good town if you’re  a college student, if you’re in the medical field or a police officer. If you’re an alumni who has loved her time at ECU, graduated, moved on and seen more of the world and now finds herself back in Greenville… well you make the most of it. River Park North is an unexpected oasis in this student oriented town. It is located near the airport aka in the middle of nowhere, but just in case you want a crazy night on the town it’s next to the local bingo establishment. I digress.

I found this park 1 month before I graduated from ECU in 2011 and subsequently forgot about it. I’m super glad I was reminded of it and got to spend time there recently. Since moving back, I’ve been twice with Will and Atlas and it was so worth it based solely on how happy it made our fluffy boy, not to mention us. We love hiking and Atlas was born for walkies so it was the perfect day trip that was only a 5 minute drive away from our house. 

The park isn’t in the best part of town, but it is extremely well-maintained, staffed and everyone who goes there are families. There are kayaks and paddleboat you can rent, which is absolutely going to happen when it gets warm. You can fish and go hiking on lots of different trails. The cool thing is that if you have cut fishing line they have special recycling tubes so it doesn’t get caught in the wildlife or stuck in the regular trash that ends up in the oceans. We went on a relatively warm day and walked on the long trail along the 2 lakes and through the swamp land with lots of beautiful places to take pictures. There are even playgrounds for kids and a nature center for educational purposes. 

The mosquitos get really bad if you go on the dirt paths off the main loop, which is exactly what we did. They lulled us in to a false sense of security by waiting until we were 5 minutes in to our walk on this trail to start attacking us ruthlessly and stealing our blood. At this point, Atlas was attacked by a bee that was on the ground and got stung on his paw. So while we were under siege we had to carry a 55lb upset dog. Luckily his paw didn’t swell up and he quickly forgot it ever happened. Minus the bug invasions it is the perfect place to wear out your pup!

Just in case all of that isn’t enough we ran around in a few of the fields that overlook the playground and one of the lakes. It would be the perfect place to have an off leash dog park…just saying. The next time we go we’re going to take advantage of one of the shelters with small grills installed. It’s pretty much the perfect place to spend the day if you like being outside. We’ve only been twice and had a lot of fun minus the bee sting and mosquitos, but now that it’s colder it is absolutely perfect for family shenanigans. Bring it on!

B's BBQ The Best in Town

Do you enjoy barbecue that is lean, juicy, slow cooked, and seasoned to perfection?? How about great service and a family operated business that is a local legend? B's BBQ delivers on all of those levels. Every.Single.Time

I first heard about this "hole in the wall" restaurant when I first lived in Greenville, NC from 2007-2011. I went my first time in 2010 and am so upset to say that I've only had the chance to go once more 5 years later. I'm convinced life doesn't want me to be insanely over the top food happy 100% of the time so it has to throw curveballs that keep me away from the best barbecue of my life by shoving work and school in the way. If only they delivered!

I'm getting way ahead of myself. B's BBQ is quite literally a little hole in the wall TINY restaurant in Greenville, NC. It started as a fixer upper. The owner, the late Bill McLawhorn, bought an old country store and made it in to the restaurant that it is today. The McLawhorn family is still very involved and can be found behind the counter every single day. It just wouldn't be the same without that family run aspect.

Just how good is it? Picture this. B's opens for lunch every Tuesday through Saturday and by 11 they have almost always sold out of their entire stock. This cash only business does not have a telephone so don't plan on calling ahead to check if they have run out of food! People leave with large (think microwave sized) boxes filled with nothing but the delicious BBQ and yummy sides of potatoes and green beans with some hush puppies added in for good measure. Even re-heated the food is great if that is any indicator and there's no gross greasy residue you want to avoid like most reheated dinners.

Staying true to their roots they haven't expanded or opened another restaurant. Everyone behind the counter knows the regulars by name and their orders by heart. They rely on word of mouth for their business and oh my goodness has it worked out for them. They've appeared in numerous magazines touting the title of one of the top places to eat not in the city, but in the state. These people know BBQ. I don't know about you, but most southerners like myself are picky about BBQ. Wars have almost started on the simple argument of BBQ sauce base...vinegar or ketchup. Even if you're the pickiest BBQ aficionado B's won't disappoint.

B's is not what you would call an upscale establishment.  The restaurant consists of a few booths inside and I would describe is as cozy and shabby in the most endearing way possible. The service is great, but you will almost always find a line out the door. No worries though. There are plenty of characters to talk to who will regale you with stories about their favorite meal there or just great stories in general while waiting in the relatively fast-moving line.

Everyone who knows me knows I LOVE to bring my dog everywhere. They recently added a few picnic tables outside for more seating. Lots of people end up eating in their cars that are parked in the parking lot and that line the street on both sides. Yes it is actually that popular every day. The street was even named B's Barbecue Street. This place is a legend for foodies.  Okay back to my dog. The picnic tables outside let me bring my dog and another plus? I can order from the take out window on the side of the building so my dog doesn't have to wait in my car. (Don't worry I leave the car running and the AC on in the summer).

If your tummy is grumbling make sure you get to B's early and stock up on the super delicious and very well-priced noms that they have to offer. I know I'm going to go back soon. Nags Head Day Trip

What do you do on a nice weekend after moving to North Carolina when it’s super sunny and warm outside? You pack up the dog, the boyfriend and hop in the car to drive to Nags Head for a day of fun in the sun with my amazing tiny family. 

We take our dog everywhere we possibly can and the OBX is the perfect place to take your fluffy family. On the way, we looked up local restaurants where we could grab a bite to eat and also bring Atlas. At a glance, South Beach Grill looked pretty good. Turns out pretty good was actually amazing.

The Grill had two stories of inside and outdoor seating. We got to sit outside at picnic tables on the ground floor. The food was fresh and the ingredients were locally sourced. Will had a fish burger and I had a sandwich. What was more important and rare was the doggy menu. Most places don’t allow dogs much less have their own menus just for dogs. The service was spectacular and the waitress loved Atlas so much that she kept bringing him bowls of crushed ice (his favorite). We even had people come outside just to see Atlas and talk about how cute he is. I’ll never get sick of hearing that!

Great service, good prices, and happy bellies full of delicious food were a concoction for a fantastic day. We even found free parking in the middle of beach season! HECK YES. It was a short and pleasant walk to a public access beach since we were closer to the residential/private beaches. The beach was pretty deserted so it was easy to find a nice spot to ourselves. 

Atlas loves loves loves the beach and as soon as we hit the sand he was determined to get in the water. We put our towels down and ran to the water so he could play, dig in the wet sand, and hop around like the super happy boy he is. While he rested after an epic playtime, I went on the hunt for sea shells. I have my own tiny craft company and drift wood wind chimes are one of the things I make and I’m always needing more shells. I got a ton of them while enjoying the heck out of the beautiful day walking up and down the beach!

Our walk back to the car was interrupted by a quick stop for one of our favorite things…ice cream! We stopped at Scammel’s Corner Surf Shop and Ice Cream Parlor. They boast having authentic Hershey’s ice cream and they were not lying. There were tons and tons of flavors making it hard to choose just one. We made our choices and enjoyed delicious ice cream on the way back to the car. Don’t worry, Atlas got a few licks of vanilla in too. 

By the time we got back to the car we were all satisfied, full, and ready to make the trip back home. It was all in all a great day out and I would absolutely repeat the day trip again and again! On our way home, we stopped by a Seafood Market which had an amazing selection of fresh caught seafood. There were crab legs, frog legs, fish, oysters, clams, etc. It was a seafood lover's heaven! You should absolutely make a stop here if you're driving west from Nags Head!

Greenville Greenway

Greenville, NC is a large town in the middle of nowhere North Carolina. It is the home of the East Carolina Pirates and boasts a lot of school spirit and youthfulness. I attended ECU from 2007-2011 and loved my four years here. As much as I loved it, I never expected to be back, much less find a job here. There’s not much here in the way of jobs unless you’re a teacher, in the medical or criminal justice fields. I’ve discovered lots of new places and revisited old haunts. By far my absolute favorite find was a relatively new addition to the town that hadn’t existed when I lived here. What’s it called? The Greenville Greenway. 

Right now, it’s a series of paths, mostly paved, spanning throughout the town for walkers, bikers, runners, etc. It’s even dog friendly! Most of it runs by the river and, as the name would suggest, is very green and scenic. It’s my favorite part of Greenville, especially due to the fact that most of G-Vegas is either part of the college or consists of chain restaurants or just boring, old business buildings. It’s a patch of oasis in an otherwise concrete jungle. 

What’s so great about it besides the fact that it’s super green? There’s lots of places to put your kayaks or canoes in the water. Dogs and their owners get to walk along it and meet new people. It’s a much healthier, and not to mention prettier way to get around to certain parts of the town. I now bike to the grocery store, post office, and the local library. Why not? I love the exercise and being outside, plus it saves money! There are even places where I can let my dog hop around in the river and throw sticks for him. 

Speaking of dog friendly, there’s a dog park that is super well-maintained and almost everyone in town with a dog goes there to let their dogs have the time of their lives. It’s a great way to meet fellow dog lovers as well!

I love using the Greenway to run. I choose to do a 4 mile loop on the part that is right down the street from my house. There’s also a 2 mile loop for days when I’m a little more rushed. Atlas, my dog, also loves to have daily walkies on the Greenway to strut his stuff, sniff, and meet other dogs and humans. They have lots of benches along the way to look out over the water and several piers for fishing. They even have bins filled with plastic bags to ensure the pathways stay poo free. How cool is that?

For anyone of any age, the Greenville Greenway is the highlight of my time here and is sure to be a hit for anyone who enjoys being outside. I’ve never had any sort of problem on the Greenway and everyone I’ve met is always nice. What’s even better is that it never seems crowded. There’s never mobs of people, but you do see a steady flow of people without feeling like you’re losing your personal space. Most of the time I only see a few other people. It all depends on the weather!

The only downside is hurricane season. Greenville, NC is rarely affected in any major way, but every now and then, as was the case with hurricane Joaquin we suffered major flooding of the lower laying areas. The Greenway was one of those. Nothing was damaged, but it was under a little over a foot of water for about a week. I was so bummed that I couldn’t run my loop and get my daily fix of beautiful ponds, bridges, and river views in before heading to work!

Knott Island Pet Sitting

My boyfriend's dad and his wife, Carey own a beautiful house on Knott's Island in North Carolina. They have a fenced in backyard on about 1.5 acres of land. Will's dad works for the city as an electrician and Carey is a professional dog sitter who also works at a vet clinic. They have four fluffy children of their own, Leigh, Owen, Easton and Ramsey and watch anywhere from 1-7 dogs on top of that depending on the season. It is without a doubt doggy heaven.

Imagine your life as a furry, happy go lucky dog. You run in to this green yard, there's balls everywhere and someone to constantly throw them. There's other dogs who love to play and snuggle. There's even a pool they had built just for the dogs... not even kidding. Carey also makes sure they are super healthy, friendly with other dogs, gets their nails trimmed, etc. It's the bomb diggity.

We were set to move June 17th from Virginia Beach, VA to Greenville, NC. We gladly accepted their proposal of pet sitting for them from the 12th to the 15th. We didn't really want to pack anyway and who would pass up a whole 3-4 days of playing with dogs, lounging by a pool and just relaxing before a gigantic move? We were not one of those people to pass that up. We packed up some of the clothes we hadn't shoved in random suitcases already and made our way down to Knott's Island.


We were greeted by the furry brigade and 2 extras who were lucky enough to stay the weekend. We're down there enough that all the clients know who we are and their dogs know and love us as well. One of the things we were most excited about, besides the dogs of course, was the kitchen and grill set up they had. Will's family is Italian so cooking is in the genes. We both love to cook and grill so having an enormous, full stocked kitchen and grill was complete heaven for us.

Our first night there we had a few friends over to grill out with, have a couple of drinks, and just have fun playing with all the pups. It was an all around fun time seeing great friends, not thinking about packing everything we owned and transporting it only to have to unpack it all (UGH!), and just relax.

The next day was spent lounging by the pool, cooking, and playing with dogs constantly. We ended the day by cooking more and watching good movies on Netflix while all 6 dogs tried to snuggle us at once. Pure heaven.

Want to know something that's not heaven? Short story: taking a bath while 3 dogs stare into your soul THE ENTIRE BATH. Long story: Atlas loves to follow me in to the bathroom, except when I shower just in case that means he will have to have a bath as well. No matter what, if I'm just using the toilet he has to come in with me and stare at me. Turns out Easton, Ramsey and Atlas like to team up and marathon stare at whoever is in the bathroom and especially the bathtub. Easton is obsessed with anything water and will go nuts when he thinks he can get in a pool. Ramsey just likes being around people and Atlas follows me around constantly just because I'm mom.

This was my first bath in over 2 years and I was really looking forward to finishing my book and soaking in their giant jacuzzi tub. Little did I know I had an audience. The second I got in and couldn't get back out without soaking the floor the bathroom door flies open and in comes the creep brigade of Easton, Ramsey and Atlas. They didn't even lay down. I ended up just getting out early so they would stop staring at me. All I could see over the tub was 3 floating dog heads who seemed to be plotting how to best get in the tub without me noticing.



Anyway, it was a mostly uneventful, relaxing weekend full of relaxing, pool time, puppy play time, snuggling, exercising and cooking with friends. They don't go away much, but we're hoping the next time they go out of town we get to house/pet sit again and have another few days in doggy paradise. They came back and noticed the house wasn't burned down, the dogs were all happy, and we even re-stocked their fridge with beer. Who could ask for better house/dog sitters than that?

Ignorance is NOT Bliss

Recently NC passed amendment one. Even from all the way in England people were outraged. Discrimination is a worldwide issue and I found myself having discussions over "equal" rights for all no matter what sexual orientation they had chosen. I'm going to step on my soap box. I'm just one voice, but it seems like people are reading my blog from all over the world so maybe I can make a small difference by just expressing my opinion.  With that said, I'm not pushing my opinion upon anyone just merely stating what I think is right and wrong. Feel free to debate with me in a mature manner.

I want to start out by saying that love is love. Love is hard to find, especially one that is true and loyal. How is that right to ban someone who loves another from getting married? The sanctity of marriage has been used and abused by celebrities, royalty, and government officials for centuries. Whether they are gay, bi, or lesbian these people are not flaunting their love in the public's face more than a straight person. It honestly disturbs me that people today can still be so discriminatory over something like marriage. This is our generation's version of discrimination against African Americans. I just hope one day we can look back from a time where the gay community has the same rights that I enjoy, such as the simple and meaningful act of marriage.

The following picture, that I do not own, sums up my thoughts quite nicely with a lovely use of sarcasm.

I grew up in a household that taught me to respect every person I met. Our country's supposed values teach us to treat people equally. There is separation of Church and State for a reason and I feel this amendment is in violation of this. After living for 4 years in North Carolina I wish I still lived there so I could have voted against. After seeing a map of the United States depicting which states allowed gay marriage I was appalled. It's legal to marry someone you're related to, yet someone you love you can't marry because they are of the same sex. I find this to be extremely backwards.

I also grew up with a strong influence from the theatre industry. I majored in theatre in college also. Yes it is stereotypical, but I met a number of gay, lesbian and bi people who I am now honored to call friends. I would not want someone to ban myself from being married, nor do I ever wish that upon someone else. I hope one day that the citizens of American and not just North Carolina will realize how ignorant and discriminatory these laws are and make a change. Everyone deserves the right to love and marriage.
