Boo Boo: The Best Little Old Man Cat

Alright ladies and gentlemen, get the tissues out now. It’s going to be hard for me to write this so I can imagine it’s going to be an emotional, bitter sweet read. From day 1 Boo Boo was the most annoying cat in the world and by that I mean the sweetest, loudest, most snuggly, bony pawed, skinny, sleepy, happy, and caring cat I’ve ever met.

Let’s back it up a minute. Boo Boo has a sob story beginning, which leads up to his adoption into the house of happy fluffs (our house/family) by us. Boo Boo obtained his unfortunate and extreme non-manly name from his previous owners, you guessed it,  an elderly couple. He was apparently the husband’s cat and up until his passing he was taken care of extremely well. His death lead to his wife’s slow decline and dementia. After a week of forgetting about the pets she owned her daughter came to visit, realized the situation and went to work. She contacted Will’s Mom to see if we could foster the cat, which of course we did. Sadly, he came to us with a whole list of problems:
  1. SERIOUS gum disease and rotten teeth
  2. Malnutrition
  3. Nails growing into his paw pads
  4. Neglect
  5. Aloof and doesn’t like people….supposedly
He immediately went to the vet before we even got him and went on meds and got his nails trimmed and paw pads cauterized. After pain meds and a tooth surgery he was deemed super fit or as fit as a 14 year old cat could be after all that. Now this cat was skinny… and I mean skinny. His favorite thing to do was walk on our faces in the middle of the night and scream with his extremely stinky breath in our faces. Needless to say I was not a fan and didn’t see us adopting him. Meanwhile, Will had fallen in love with him. The surgery also helped clear up that gross breath so it was slightly better. He had blood work done as well and the vet told us he had the blood work of a cat half his age. Good for that old man :). Such a trooper.

The second this cat walked in to our house we knew whoever said he was aloof must have be delusional. He ran up to everyone, yelled until he was pet and snuggled for hours on end. He was hands down the sweetest thing in the world and he won both of our hearts. It didn’t even take 2 days and he was officially adopted into our family. There he received an insane amount of love and food and finally became a healthy weight and pretty dang handsome.

His favorite thing to do? Sleep. He could sleep anywhere…especially on hard surfaces in awkward positions. For example: upside down with one leg on the table bar and his face rammed in between the floor and the bar, halfway on the cat scratcher and halfway upside down, fully upside down, etc.  He also liked jumping on the bedside table, skidding across it and shoving everything on top on the floor in the process. He was a mess, but he was our mess. It just made him more endearing. Other than sleeping his favorite thing to do was purr. If you looked at this car he would start to purr. I don’t mean normal cat purrs. I mean purring so loudly you could hear him across the room. He was permanently happy the second we brought him home and demanded pets so he could start purring even harder. If purring were an olympic sport Boo Boo would hold the world record for the most gold medals won. He’s pretty incredible.

Boo Boo always loved men more and Will became his favorite person on Earth. You could also find him curled up next to him on the couch, sitting on his chest while Will tried to play video games or smacking and yelling Will demanding attention. I eventually became his second favorite and he always visited me while I was sitting on the floor after dinner working on something or reading.

Around Thanksgiving things started to go downhill. He had 3 seizures in 2 days and after 5 hours at the emergency vet, tears, and extreme anxiety we got to take him home with some medication that would hopefully help. The seizures are super rare in cats, especially so many and we ruled out everything but brain issues as the cause. During his seizures Atlas, our dog, brought Boo Boo every toy he could find and was deeply concerned the whole time. Boo Boo even won over all the pets in the house. He was the coolest little guy ever.

His meds helped, but he started to lose weight. By the week before Christmas he had lost 2 pounds, and his muscles started to deteriorate in his hind legs, plus he slept more and just wasn’t quite the same. What made us call it was when he started not using the litter box. We would put him in and he would jump right out and pee or poop on the floor. He just wasn’t living the quality of life he deserved and we knew it was time. We had one last day with him and cried pretty much the entire time while non-stop loving on Boo Boo.

The day of we took Boo Boo to Petsmart and brought Atlas along for support. We were wrecks. The Petsmart crew was super sweet and understanding. We spent a few more minutes with him and they gave him an injection and made sure he didn’t feel any pain. We were there until the end and a little after. I’ve never had to put a pet down before and it pretty much ripped my heart out. I can only imagine what it would be like for a pet that I’ve had longer than 1.5 years.

After 1.5 years this cat left a huge imprint on both of our lives. Everyone who came over always told us how cool of a cat he was. We tried to give him the best life possible and loved every second we had with him. We just wish we could’ve had more. Boo Boo was really something special and a cat who I will never forget. Rest In Peace buddy. I hope you are up there drinking from all the water bowls and toilets you can find and are sleeping on all the weird, hard surfaces. Make sure you yell at everyone to pet you. You deserve it.

A week after we put Boo Boo to sleep we baked cookies and brought it to the staff for being so sweet. They looked at us like we had grown 2 heads, but were super happy about it. I doubt anyone else baked them cookies for something like that. A few days later I got a letter in the mail from them. I opened it assuming that it was a thank you note. I was not prepared at all for what it really was. It was a “sorry for your loss note” and everyone in the clinic had signed it. I immediately burst into tears on my front porch, walked inside, showed Will and we ended up hugging it out and crying together.

Pets made the world a better place. Boo Boo absolutely changed my life for the better and I hope he felt the same about us. We love you Boo Boo.

The Joys of Having Pets

"Wilderness is not defined by the absence of certain activities, but rather by the presence of certain unique and invaluable characteristics."--Nick Rahall

My once 8lb little ball of fluff has now become a 53lb giant ball of fluff and energy. He is probably the best dog imaginable, which I know anyone with a dog who is reading this will instantly disagree because they have the best dog, but let's agree to disagree :)    Atlas is my best friend, partner in crime, fluffy child, and can be annoying while at the same time being as cute as possible, which is an accomplishment in itself.

Atlas usually needs to burn off a lot of energy and LOVES walkies. He was practically born for walkies. We go for walks in a nearby neighborhood about 5 days a week depending on weather. For him, the colder the weather the better...for me? Not so much, but I do it anyway. I bundle myself up so I end up looking like that poor, unfortunate child from "A Christmas Story" who couldn't put his hands by his side because of the billions of layers he was forced to wear in the snow.

Today we went for a walk right as it started to flurry. There was a winter storm warning, so I wanted to get the walk out of the way before we couldn't drive safely anymore. Atlas was trotting along being ridiculously cute and well-behaved while enjoying the weather immensely. I was bundled up and enjoying the snow that we had FINALLY gotten. For about a week now, there has been a flattened, desiccated, (obviously) dead squirrel carcass sitting in the middle of the sidewalk where we pass by. Atlas knows the command "leave it" and whenever I see it I always make sure to tell him that and he usually, keyword there, USUALLY leaves it alone.

Today? Not so.

Today, I saw "Atlas. Leave it." What does he do? He pretends he can't hear me, walks up to it, and grabs it by what I can only imagine was a leg...Everything after this happened so fast that I'll just give you a play by play.

Me: Atlas NO.

Atlas: Screw you mom. This is delicious. Can't you smell this beautiful aroma?

Me: DROP IT

Atlas: What mom? I couldn't hear you? Yum yum yum

Me: Atlas no. Drop it right now.. don't you dare...

Atlas just gives me this look that can only be described as "hmm... I wonder what would happen if I shook this with all the energy I have right now. Mom would really like that"

Me: EWWW NO. Please for the love of everything just drop it.

Atlas: Okay I'll drop it... AS I SHAKE IT VIOLENTLY. HAHAHAHA

At this point he finally listens and I get exactly what I asked for in the form of a disgusting, partially rotted, road killed squirrel carcass flying at my face at full speed while it was simultaneously exploding fur ALL OVER THE PLACE.

If I hadn't been paying attention and ducked at the last second like a super awesome ninja with moves straight out of The Matrix I would have gotten a face full of dead squirrel. Thanks Atlas...

It's days like these that make me wonder how I got through life without things like this happening on a daily basis. With Atlas, things like this happen ALL THE TIME. Oddly enough, I couldn't imagine my life without it.

On a MUCH cuter note...Later that day we decided to cut our cats' nails. We could tell wherever they both were in the house by the clicking noises their nails made on the floors so we decided it was time to break out the clippers. We have one cat, Boo Boo,  (no we didn't name him that god awful name) who HATES having his nails cut with a fiery passion that could only come from the 7th circle of hell. We have to wrap him in a blanket or as we like to call it  "A Purrito" so we don't get disemboweled, bitten, scratched, etc. All went pretty well after much screaming on his part. This entire time Atlas was by his side with his nose right up against Boo Boo like he was comforting him. Once we released him from the purrito Atlas chased him down and laid down next to him.

That's not even the cutest part. Our other cat, Natasha, is much better about getting her pedicure so we don't have to wrap her up. She grumbles, but she's all talk. Boo Boo is a newer addition to the fur family, so Atlas is much more attached to Natasha. Will was cutting her nails, and I was holding her in my arms while we sat on the bed. Atlas jumped on the bed next to us and would cry at us every time she meowed. Once we let her go she jumped down and tried to fix the hair that had gotten all crazy. Atlas went in to the other room and started bringing her his toys to cheer her up. He would follow her around and make sure he was in between her and us for a little while to make sure he protected her.

My dog can be the most annoying thing on the face of the planet one minute and then do something so sweet the next. Needless to say, this guy has stolen my heart. I have, by far, the best dog in the universe.

Things that are okay to do as a cat, but not as a human

"Cat: a pygmy lion who loves mice, hates dogs, and patronizes human beings." --Oliver Herford

Cats are notorious for doing annoyingly cute things that make us laugh and feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside, but at the same time wonder why we ever adopted them in first place. As those of you who read my blog regularly know that I have had some interesting encounters with cats recently. This time the culprit is named Natasha. She is my boyfriend's (Will) cat. For some reason she thinks it is okay to bang on the door at 5am and run on the bed like a maniac when we are fast asleep in dream land. She's the inspiration for this story. Enjoy :)

Things that are okay to do as a cat, but not as a human being:

1. Bite people when they attempt to give you affection.

Cats are notorious for letting you pet them a specific number of times before they attack your hand. This mystical number changes each petting session and you will never be given any warning.
It's even worse when it happens with people... That would just be horrible.

2. Lick yourself in front of people

How cats can lick themselves for hours I will never know. I do know that it is hilarious to pet them right after they finish. The dirty look like they are calculating how best to murder you without getting their fur dirtier than your hand just made it is priceless.

3. Sit on someone

Cats always find the most awkward way to sit on you right when you are in the middle of reading something or are about to get up. Once they're on you, you're trapped by a purring ball of fur that happens to have retractable claws of fury.

4. Knock over everything on a table for no reason

We've all had it happen. Sometimes it scares us to death when a lamp falls on your face in the middle of the night. Sometimes we think someone is breaking into the house, but it's really the cat parading around knocking your things on the floor while staring you in the eye daring you do stop them. Can you do anything about it? No. Why? Because they're cats.

5. Wake people up at 5am.

Whether it's the cats making loud noises that makes it sound like a troupe of tap dancing sumo wrestlers are on your roof or right next to you in bed or the melodious screech of cats singing you the song of their people at the top of their lungs there is no denying that they are doing it just to enjoy our reactions. My personal experience with this has not been fun. EVERY SINGLE TIME I spend the night at Will's the cat decides to learn out to play the drums on his closet door and makes a surprisingly loud noise. Guess what time she does this? 3am. Every. Single. Time. Nothing will stop her. She is determined to make sweet sweet music with that door. Only it's not sweet. It's horrifying to wake up to and makes me want to lock her out of the room. Number 6 is what happens as a result of locking her out. I've chosen the lesser of 2 evils... number 5...

PS I tried to replicate (obviously) the noise Natasha makes on that door... I came nowhere close. She's got some sort of noise making voodoo that she does.

6. Crying...or should I say meowing outside of doors

I don't know why cats think that because a door is closed that they need to A) beat it down mercilessly because how DARE you shut me out of a room and B) why they have to sit outside the door constantly testing their opera skills in how loud and proud they can meow. For such a small creature they can really make a ridiculous amount of noise. Of course they do this at stupid o clock in the morning when the rest of the world is asleep.

7. Bringing dead animals to you

Now I don't mean the friendly neighborhood "oh hey I went hunting here is a lump of meat for your freezer." I mean the "hey I just killed this with my bare hands and dropped it by your feet. Hope you don't mind the trail of blood and gore I left all over the yard and my fur that I'm about to rub all over your legs and furniture for you to discover later. Enjoy!"

Yes that is my dad holding a dead chipmunk. Don't worry it died of natural causes. The last thing I need is for people to think my dad has a vendetta against cute and cuddly chipmunks. Turns out he found it (dead) on top of a filing cabinet in a blanket where it went to live out its last hours. I guess it got trapped in the garage and well... ended up very flat and lifeless. He came into my room (my Dad not the chipmunk turned zombie) with a goofy grin and pulled that dude from behind his back. Honestly I'm used to dead animals being randomly placed in the house. Mostly in the freezer and occasionally his office, but bringing them into my room as I'm typing a blog was A) a bad choice for him since his story is now global and B) caught me very off guard as my room is generally dead body free...unless it's spiders... then it's a war zone...

8. Hide/sleep in awkward places

I cannot say how many times I've walked into a room and done a double take because the top of my door or a drawer suddenly grew fur and claws. Unfortunately I can say that I've unknowingly sat down in places where I thought my feet would be safe from attach since there couldn't possibly be space underneath the couch and gotten my feet chewed on. Sometimes discovering a cat in odd places is amusing, other times I'm convinced they are testing your hearts ability to not fail on you just in case they need to know for their future evil master plans.

9. Sit on computers

Computers are sources of heat therefore cats love them. However, they ALWAYS want to lay on them when you have a particularly urgent matter to attend to on that computer. You know your computer is about to be blitzkrieged when you sense you're being watched. You turn your head and turn back to the computer to realize that the cat has tricked you, is now sitting on your keyboard with your hands trapped underneath the cat, its tail is in your face, AND the cat is looking the cutest/most innocent it has ever looked since being a kitten. It's not fair.

Cats clearly are going to do what they want, when they want, and how they want. Just as clearly, humans cannot do the same things otherwise we would probably be considered nuts. Some people love cats and I am personally a dog person, but cats who don't do the things listed above are alright in my book. I even have a soft spot for Natasha who does ALL of those things... except bringing me dead animals, but I'm convinced that's next and will also be at 3am. Although there is nothing we can do to prevent any of these things I do have some advice. Get a dog.
